Disability Access

If you have a disability, we have a number of features and services at Whanganui Hospital available to help you feel more at ease. Our disability services extend to your support person(s), family/whānau and visitors.  

Plan your visit

If you have a disability and you are likely to require extra support during a hospital visit, we suggest you plan your visit beforehand. Please feel free to phone us prior to your arrival and ask to be directed to the relevant service so you and the staff can plan for your individual needs. Whanganui Hospital - phone 06 348 1234.

Drop-off zone

There are drop-off zones for patients and visitors available at:

  • the main entrance to the hospital
  • at the entrance to the Emergency Department and WAM (Whanganui Accident & Medical) 
  • as well as space to drop off outside buildings accessed through Gate 2.

We encourage you to use the drop off zones as required and to park in a mobility car park.

Mobility parking

Whanganui Hospital has 23 designated parking spaces for people with a mobility parking permit. These carparks are available in key areas within the hospital public parking areas. Please display your permit, as we recognise how important it is to keep this parking for people who most need it.

Building C: Te Awhina One in the car park

Building G: Te Kopae Two to the right of the main doors

 

Whanganui Hospital main entrance

There are reception desks at the entrance to each public building at Whanganui Hospital. Unless otherwise instructed or visiting a mental health and addiction service, we suggest you enter via Whanganui Hospital's Main Entrance. Seating is available in the foyer and there is signage, receptionists and volunteers there to help you find your way.

Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are located inside the foyer of Whanganui Hospital's Main Entrance. If you need a wheelchair and none are available, please ask a volunteer or at any reception desk and they will find one for you.

Volunteers

We are very fortunate to have 'Meet and Greet' volunteers available to welcome and assist people at Whanganui Hospital's Main Entrance most mornings and some afternoons. Please feel free to ask them for support if you need it.

Lifts

Lifts are available for all floors.

Accessible toilets

Accessible toilet facilities are located in all publicly-accessed buildings.

Whanganui Hospital wards

The wards have been built with a number of design features aimed to improve the experience and independence of people with disabilities.

Dining facilities

Wheelchair accessible dining facilities are available in both the café near the main entrance and the Top Café on Gate 2. If you require assistance please ask at the counter.

Companion dogs

Disabled people using appropriately certified canines as aides have access to hospital facilities.

Sign language interpreters

Please let us know in advance if you require a sign interpreter when you are accessing care at Whanganui DHB. We can also update your medical record so that staff will know your needs in the future.

Interpreters of other languages

Language Line
If you require the services of interpreter in another language, Whanganui DHB has a list of a number of staff who speak other languages plus we can access Language Line, an interpreting service that exists to improve communication between clients and clinical staff. Language line allows clients with little or no English to ask for a telephone interpreter.

Health Passport

A Health Passport is a booklet that we highly recommend you carry with you when attending hospitals or other providers of health and disability services. A Health Passport has spaces for you to put information about how you want people to communicate with and support you when you use health or disability services. You can get a Health Passport by phoning the Health and Disability Commissioner’s office on 0800 11 22 33, by emailing hdc@hdc.org.nz, or via www.hdc.org.nz/disability/health-passport/
