Whanganui Hospital Chapel

Whanganui Hospital has one Ecumenical Chaplain and one Roman Catholic Chaplain. Chaplains visit the wards regularly. They can mediate for and counsel patients and their families on spiritual concerns and offer prayer, spiritual guidance and the sacraments.

The Ecumenical Chaplain is available regardless of a patient’s religious beliefs. The Ecumenical Chaplain, or his locum, are on call 24 hours a day.  If the Catholic Chaplain is unavailable, Catholic parish priests may be called.

The Chapel/Whare Karakia is available to you and your family/whanau at any time, whether you are in the habit of Church attendance or not. Services are held at 10am each Sunday. If you would like to attend, please tell your nurse early on Sunday morning. A hearing aid induction loop area is included in the Chapel.

The chapel is located on the first floor of the main hospital building. It is open 24 hours a day.

Justice of the Peace

Justice of the Peace (JPs) are members of the community appointed by the Governor General. JPs are ‘people of good standing in the community who are respected as people of good sense, character and integrity’.

Their work is an unpaid service not connected with their employment.

Ministerial duties carried out by a Justice of the Peace comprise principally:

  • witnessing signatures
  • certifying documents
  • the witnessing of Land Transfers and other documents
  • the taking of declarations, affidavits or affirmations.
If you require a JP while in hospital, please advise a staff member. A staff member who is a JP is often available to perform Justice of the Peace duties on site.

Wheelchair & orderly services

If you require a wheelchair during your stay, please ask a staff member to help you. They will call an orderly who can bring you a wheelchair.

Please note that this service is not available for those patients wanting to leave the hospital grounds for a cigarette.
