Whanganui District Health Board (WDHB) is delighted to have secured high profile obesity expert Dr Robyn Toomath as keynote speaker for the board’s annual Porritt Lecture on 17 November.

Widely recognised for her 14-year obesity campaign: Fight the Obesity Epidemic, Dr Toomath is an endocrinologist, clinical director of General Medicine at Auckland District Health Board and author of Fat Science: Why diets and exercise don’t work and what does, published in April 2016.

It was during her tenure as president of the NZ Society for the Study of Diabetes, that Dr Toomath decided to apply her energy to preventing obesity.

The FOE (Fight the Obesity Epidemic) activist group she co-founded in 2001, was instrumental in achieving support for a select committee enquiry into diabetes and obesity.

“I wrote my book with the aim of destroying the myth of personal responsibility as the solution for the obesity epidemic,” Dr Toomath says. “Rather, my focus is empowering overweight people to demand an environment that favours healthy living.”

Dr Toomath will deliver her lecture in the Whanganui Room, Whanganui Racecourse, Purnell Street at 7pm, Thursday 17 November.

Sponsored by Wanganui Medical & Research Foundation & the Whanganui District Health Board, the Porritt Lecture is a public event to which Whanganui district residents are invited to attend. Entry is free.
