New skin clinics for Whanganui patients

The Whanganui District Health Board (WDHB) has contracted dermatologist Dr Darshan Singh to provide a monthly clinic for public patients at Wanganui Hospital where the first clinic took place last month.

WDHB business manager medical Louise Torr says it’s a service that’s been widely welcomed by the WDHB and Whanganui-based dermatology patients who no longer have to drive to Palmerston North for specialist treatment.

And Dr Singh is equally pleased with the development saying the WDHB has done a ‘great job’ establishing a clinic at the hospital where patients can access a publicly funded dermatology service.

In the meantime, a plastic surgery outreach clinic has also been established at Wanganui Hospital where Hutt Hospital plastic surgeon Marcus Bisson holds a clinic once every two months for patients requiring skin cancer treatments, cancer surgery including breast reconstruction and reconstructive surgery for injuries. The first clinic was held in June.

This is the first time Whanganui patients have had access to a plastic surgeon without having to travel to Wellington or Palmerston North for pre-surgery and follow up appointments.

Mr Bisson says he finds it very rewarding being able to provide a plastic surgery outreach service for patients living in the Whanganui region.

“Hutt Hospital wanted to provide a public plastics service for the Whanganui population and we’ve welcomed Wanganui Hospital’s positive response to our proposal,” he said.
