Work is underway to establish a Friends of the Hospital voluntary group headed by two experienced Whanganui volunteers Lynne Morris (chair) and Ann Petherick (secretary).
Along with Cathy Randall, Mrs Morris and Mrs Petherick have provided a much appreciated hairdressing service for patients which they say will continue as part of the Friends of the Hospital group.
Mrs Petherick says at this point she thinks it will be November when she and Mrs Morris start interviewing volunteers – both men and women of all ages who would like to spend time supporting patients and the hospital community.
Some of the tasks the group plans to perform include operating a magazine trolley sponsored by the Rotary Club of Wanganui and the Men’s Shed; meeting and greeting visitors coming through the Main Entrance; providing companionship for long-stay patients; changing flowers and continuing the hair dressing service.
The volunteers will wear easily identified official badges and items of clothing yet to be chosen.
“It is very exciting to see new ideas and opportunities being created for members of our community to become involved as volunteers at the hospital,” says WDHB business manager Louise Torr.
“I would like to thank current and past Pink Ladies who have made a significant contribution to our hospital community over the years. Some have worked here for almost four decades which is an outstanding commitment and one we appreciate very much. I wish them all the best for the future.
“I’m delighted that Mrs Morris and Mrs Petherick have offered to take on the task of recruiting volunteers and managing the Friends of the Hospital. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is invited to call Ann Petherick on 06 347 7534 to register their interest.”
