WDHB invites public to Porritt Lecture

26 November 2012
The Whanganui District Health Board (WDHB) invites Whanganui residents with an interest in Advance Care Planning (ACP) to attend this year’s Porritt Lecture on Thursday.
The topic is ‘Crucial Conversations: Future Planning for End-of-life Care’ – a presentation by highly respected Auckland-based palliative care specialist Dr Sara Rishworth.
WDHB Emergency Department director Athol Steward describes Advance Care Planning as a process of discussion and shared planning for future healthcare which involves the patient, family and healthcare professionals.
“ACP, as we call it, gives people the opportunity to develop and express their preferences for end of life care,” Dr Steward says.  “The aim is to improve the quality of care provided to the dying patient and in doing so, to consider and appreciate the patient’s values, and gain a better understanding of their current and future health and treatment options – what they want and don’t want.
“When the time is right, everyone of us, would benefit from a discussion about our choices when faced with a life-threatening or ending event. I encourage people of all ages to think about this question and to take the opportunity to hear Dr Rishworth.”
Sponsored by the Wanganui Research & Medical Foundation, the Porritt Lecture is being held in Wanganui Hospital’s Lecture Theatre on Thursday 29 November from 7pm - 8pm.  There is no cost.
