Services we provide

Oncology is the care and treatment of people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Medical oncology involves treatment with medications such as chemotherapy. Radiation oncology treats people using radiotherapy.

The oncology department at Nelson Marlborough accepts referrals through healthcare providers such as GPs, surgeons and physicians.

Medical oncology

Medical oncologists are part of the Nelson Marlborough team.

Medical oncology services are available daily at Nelson Hospital. Visiting clinics are held weekly at Wairau Hospital.

Radiation oncology

Radiation specialists visit Nelson Hospital and Wairau Hospital from Wellington and Christchurch.

Radiation oncology clinics from Christchurch are held:

  • fortnightly at Nelson Hospital
  • monthly at Wairau Hospital.

Wellington radiation oncologists visit Wairau Hospital monthly.

People receiving radiotherapy travel to Wellington or Christchurch. They may be eligible for support with travel and accommodation.

Oncology nursing services

Experienced cancer nurses provide care for people with cancer, and their whānau, in the Nelson Marlborough region.

Nurses support people all all stages, from diagnosis and throughout treatment.

Our aim is that people affected by cancer will have a smooth pathway through the treatment process, with referrals to appropriate support systems.
