Specialist inpatient services

The Wāhi Oranga unit at Nelson Hospital is for adults who require inpatient care because they cannot be treated in the community. The unit offers both acute care and rehabilitation.

A referral must be made by a mental healthcare provider.

The Community Assessment Team provides assessment, intervention and ongoing treatment for people over the age of 18 with serious psychiatric disorder or severe emotional and behavioural problems of a psychological nature.

Needs Assessment and Service Coordination (NASC) provides specialist assessment for persons with high and complex needs, service planning and coordination and liaison support with local, regional and national service providers.

A needs assessment is a tool to determine what support is needed for a person with mental illness. A kaupapa Māori needs assessment service is also available.
